Departments (States)

Officers elected annually by department members include president, vice president, treasurer, chaplain, and historian. The office of department secretary is a paid position, and the same individual may serve in this role for an indefinite number of years. In some departments, the secretary/treasurer is one position.

Typically, upon completion of their terms as department presidents, these members serve for one year on the Board of Directors (known as the National Executive Committee or "NEC") for the national organization.

Committee chairmen appointed annually by the incoming department president may include the following: Americanism, Auxiliary Emergency Fund, Cavalcade of Memories, Children & Youth, Community Service, Constitution & Bylaws, Education, Finance, Girls State, Junior Activities, Leadership, Legislative, Membership, National Security, Past Presidents Parley, Poppy, Public Relations, and Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation.

Typically, the incoming department president and her appointed chairmen work together to appoint committee members. This practice and specific chairmen appointed may vary by department.

Foreign Units

The reach of the American Legion Auxiliary extends far and wide because there is a universal appeal to our mission. In addition to the units in the United States, we also have a presence in Australia, Canada, China, France, Mexico, Panama, and the Philippines. Auxiliary units can be chartered just about anywhere there are people with the passion and desire to serve veterans, the military, and their families – wherever they are.

For more information about foreign units, please contact the Membership Division at National Headquarters.

Find a local Unit

The American Legion Auxiliary unit is where grassroots work of the Auxiliary takes place. There are more than 8,000 ALA units nationwide.

At the local level, The American Legion is called a post, and the Auxiliary is called a unit.

Contact a state level department to find a local unit in your area. Contact for each state is below.

“I am proud to be an ALA member. Through its programs, the Auxiliary gives me the opportunity to educate myself about how to help veterans, the troops, their families, and my community,”
Maria Moss, member of ALA Unit 149, and American Legion Riders – Chapter 149, both in Las Vegas.
