Wanted: Veterans, guardians for ALA-sponsored Honor Flight in April

Posted On: Friday, 06 February 2026

The national American Legion Auxiliary is sponsoring an all-female veteran Lone Eagle Honor Flight that will provide our nation’s heroes with an opportunity to see memorials for the wars they served in.

We’re looking for U.S. women veterans who served between the beginning of World War II and the end of the Vietnam War, or veterans from any time period who have been diagnosed with a terminal condition to participate in an April 13-15 Honor Flight experience.

In addition to veterans, guardians are also needed to help assist our nation’s heroes during their trip to Washington, D.C.

To nominate a veteran or apply to be a guardian, click here. The deadline for both veterans and guardians is Feb. 15.

Guardians play a crucial role as veterans’ travel partners during their Honor Flight experience. A guardian may be a non-spouse family member, friend, or caregiver and at least one generation younger to be able to physically assist their veterans over a three-day period (this may include pushing their veteran in a wheelchair and walking up to 10 miles throughout the day).

Slightly different than a traditional Honor Flight where veterans leave and arrive on the same plane, a Lone Eagle Honor Flight ensures all eligible veterans are able to participate in an Honor Flight experience, regardless of their geographic location. Veterans from across the country depart from their specific airport and fly into the same airport in the Washington, D.C. area to begin their momentous experience together.

The American Legion Auxiliary and Honor Flight Inc. entered a formal partnership in 2021 to support our collective missions of celebrating America’s veterans by inviting them to partake in a momentous day of honor at our nation’s memorials and monuments in Washington, D.C. The official collaboration allows ALA units and departments to directly donate funds that are generated from the distribution of our poppy.

ALA members often experience heartfelt moments at Honor Flight events, from volunteering at airports to serving as a guardian for veterans to writing letters for mail call.
