Junior members from ALA Unit 180 in the Department of California have been painting planter rocks and selling them as a fundraiser.
California Unit 180 Junior members Samantha and Natalie Goldman have been selling the rocks for $5, with a discount of $3 for veterans.
“The first round was sold in one day,” said Unit 180 President Christine Evans. “We had to get more rocks. They went to our post family, neighbors, friends.”
Designs have included the American flag, poppies, and more patriotic-themed art.
“I hope more units catch on and do this — it’s an easy fundraiser,” Evans added.
So far, the two Junior members have raised over $550 for the ALA Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund, an umbrella that supports three separate scholarship opportunities for participants in American Legion Auxiliary programs. One is for American Legion Auxiliary Junior members, another for the Junior Members of the Year, and one is for participants in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation program.
“I love it when Juniors get involved,” Evans said. “They are our future.”
How to do this project:
• Purchase flat river rocks. These can be bought at a store or online.
• Use acrylic markers to draw designs or to write inspirational messages.
• Spray the top of the rocks with clear lacquer.
In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.
