Unprecedented need, remarkable support: The AEF’s most impactful year on record

The Auxiliary Emergency Fund has been a resource for ALA members in times of financial uncertainty for over 50 years. In the spirit of serving others, AEF was created to help members who are recovering from a natural disaster or who are facing financial hardship and need short-term support. AEF has served as a way for members to extend their generosity to fellow members across the country in their darkest moments. And last year, that need was greater than ever before.

Last fiscal year (October 2024 to September 2025), the ALA awarded over $529,000 in AEF grants — the most impactful year on record. One hundred and seventy-eight Auxiliary members received grants for disaster assistance after enduring devastating events like fires, floods, and hurricanes. Another 96 members received grants for financial hardship to help them avoid homelessness and during crises like a medical emergency or job loss. These numbers represent stabilized families, safety, and hope.

Behind each AEF grant is a humble member making a plea for help due to unforeseen circumstances. Several ALA members lost their homes to hurricanes Helene and Milton and used their $3,000 grant awards to secure housing and rebuild their lives. Other members faced job insecurity after being left unable to work following a medical procedure or caregiving for a loved one. AEF ensured those members could pay their mortgages and electricity, and put food on the table while they healed.

The need for emergency assistance continues to grow as natural disasters become more frequent and economic instability continues to affect families nationwide. The rising cost of living, unpredictable emergencies, and need for caregiving mean more members may find themselves seeking help. The recent government shutdown created hardship for many households within our ALA community, and may be an indicator of additional challenges in the year to come.

AEF exists for these moments. The application process is straightforward, and grants are awarded quickly so members can focus on rebuilding and recovery rather than insecurity. The grant review committee is committed to providing relief when a member is displaced from their home or struggling to cover basic expenses during a crisis, so applications are reviewed weekly.

This program would not be possible without the generosity of units, departments, and individual supporters who stepped up last year. Every gift ensured the AEF could meet the record demand for assistance, and for that, we are grateful.

The coming year will bring its own unique set of challenges, but we can stand firm in knowing ALA members have somewhere to turn. By continuing to donate, spread the word, and uplift one another, we will ensure the AEF remains a strong and reliable lifeline.
