Wanting to make an impact for our veterans, servicemembers, and their families? Apply for a 2026-2027 American Legion Auxiliary national committee appointment to serve the Auxiliary’s mission from the national level. 
Applications are open now until Jan. 1, 2026. Any member 18 or older is welcome to apply. National, department, district, or unit level leadership is not required when applying. 

There are multiple positions open on the ALA national committees, all complementing the ALA’s legacy of Service Not Self. Read about the various committees below to find the best fit for you!

Americanism: Promote patriotism and responsible citizenship.

ALA Girls Nation: Provide a government-in-action program for high school girls who’ve completed their junior year. This committee attends and participates in the execution of the July educational program in the Washington, D.C. area. Committee members need to be capable of the weeklong physical and social demands of this position while supervising high school girls in summer heat.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund: Raise funds to support and increase member awareness of the Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF).

Children & Youth: Work collaboratively with The American Legion to promote programs that protect, care for, and support children and youth with a focus on military and veterans’ children.

Community Service: Promote the ALA’s commitment to making our communities better places to live by supporting local service projects.

National Appointment ListingConstitution & Bylaws: Inform and educate ALA members on the importance and power of having properly written, regularly reviewed and updated governing documents at all levels of the organization. Educate members how to do so.

Education: Promote quality education for children — especially military children — and adults. Encourage schools to invite veterans to speak in their classrooms, and support scholarship opportunities of the ALA and American Legion. 

Finance: Oversee the development and implementation of general national financial policy subject to approval by the National Executive Committee (NEC), provide oversight of budgeted funds in the budget, and report any significant variance to the NEC.

Junior Activities: Inspire active participation in members ages 17 and younger to help them grow in the Auxiliary. Motivate Juniors to continue their ALA membership into adulthood. This position requires the ability to attend national Junior meetings held in different cities across America as well as physical agility and endurance.

Leadership: Help better equip members to serve in leadership positions confidently. 

Legislative: Provide information and assistance to ALA members to advocate for The American Legion’s legislative agenda.(Click here to see the Legion’s priorities for the 2025-2026 administrative year). 

Membership: Encourage and support the nationwide effort to attract and retain a diverse, active membership and establish new units to ensure the ALA’s future.

National Security: Promote a strong national defense by strengthening and supporting military servicemembers and their families.

Poppy: Educate ALA members and the public on the significance of the poppy and the program’s financial benefit to veterans, military, and their families.

Public Relations: Work with ALA National Headquarters’ Communications & Marketing Division on maintaining a positive public image of the ALA by encouraging fellow members to be visible in their communities through proper branding and informing the public about our mission.

Risk & Compliance: Charged with assuming an independent oversight and advisory position with the responsibility for decision-making resting on governance, review policies designed to mitigate threats to the ALA, and provide perspective in areas that could be potential risks. Members must understand safeguarding the ALA requires having — and following — proper procedures for oversight, internal controls, and a checks-and-balance system.

Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation: Promote events, programs, and services that assist and enhance the lives of veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors by ensuring the best quality of life possible and the continuing honor of their memory. This position requires the ability to travel to the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival as well as physical agility and endurance for the duration of the event. Applicants should expect to learn the status of their application in spring 2026. Anyone not selected for a 2026-2027 national committee is encouraged to apply again next year.
